Grant supports outdoor recreation for all

West Australians with disability will have more opportunities to try outdoor recreation activities, thanks to a Lotterywest grant presented to the Dreamfit Foundation.

West Australians with disability will have more opportunities to try outdoor recreation activities, thanks to a Lotterywest grant presented to the Dreamfit Foundation.

Parliamentary Secretary for Disability Services, Andrea Mitchell, presented the $168,578 grant today at the Dreamfit Experience Program activity day, where 30 people with disability, their families and carers were able to experience activities such as archery and hovercrafting.

Disability Services Minister Helen Morton said the Lotterywest grant would fund Dreamfit's Experience Program and pay for a truck to transport equipment to and from activities across Perth.

Mrs Morton said Dreamfit played an important role in the lives of many people and would help more than 1,000 people to experience new outdoor recreation activities during 2013.

The foundation runs an engineering program which modifies or designs equipment for people with disability - from leisure vehicles to mobility and living aids.

"Dreamfit's commitment to developing resources to assist people with disability to experience the same recreational opportunities as others has been demonstrated over many years," the Minister said.

"The foundation is a worthy recipient of this Lotterywest grant, which will enable many more people to enjoy fun, adventurous recreation activities with confidence."

Mrs Morton said the foundation's work aligned with the State Government's Count Me In vision for all people to live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone.

Dreamfit chief executive officer Darren Lomman is a Count Me In ambassador for the Disability Services Commission and a member of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Disability.
