Hakea Prison gets new accommodation units
Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman will today officially open new prisoner accommodation units at Hakea Prison, the first to be completed under the State Government's 640-bed accommodation strategy.
Hakea and Casuarina prisons gain an extra 256 beds each, while Albany Regional Prison's capacity will be boosted by 128 beds.
Mr Redman said the State Government's 640-bed accommodation strategy was an innovative solution that targeted prisons most in need of additional units.
"The Liberal-National Government will continue to focus on increased infrastructure and improved education, employment and rehabilitation programs to protect the community and reduce the likelihood of recidivism," he said.
The 640 beds have been funded through a $60million saving in the cost of expanding Acacia Prison and a $7million saving following modifications to the planned Wheatbelt work camp.
Prisoners will occupy the Hakea units from June 2011.
"These units are in addition to the State Government's $655million infrastructure program to address years of neglect by the previous Labor government," the Minister said.
"The system under Labor was a shambles because they simply failed to act.
"Labor ignored our prisons during its eight years of government - a time of unprecedented economic growth when they were flush with funds - and now we are getting on with cleaning up the mess.
"The Government is committed to taking high-risk offenders off our streets and investing in increased prison infrastructure and rehabilitation programs to help break the crime cycle."
