Official opening of Hammond Park Primary School
$15.5million school built for families in City of Cockburn
Education Minister Peter Collier has officially opened Hammond Park Primary School in Perth's growing southern suburbs.
Welcomed by more than 200 students at the official opening today, Mr Collier said the $15.5million school would cater for the fast developing residential area in the City of Cockburn.
"Hammond Park Primary School is equipped with the latest in computer technology to help support students' learning," he said.
"Students are using contemporary communication technologies, including interactive whiteboards, desktop computers, notebooks and iPads.
"Since opening at the start of the school year, staff have established an environmental science focus, which will continue to evolve over the next few years with students accessing the nearby Harry Waring Marsupial Reserve."
The reserve is opposite the western boundary of the school and is home to endangered marsupials and animals such as woylies, sugar possums, echidnas and kangaroos.
The new school has five early childhood classrooms, 10 general learning classrooms, a music room, an education support centre, a library resource centre, cricket nets and hard courts.
"All teachers, including a visual arts teacher, physical education teacher and drama teacher are providing exceptional learning opportunities for students who are involved in a range of specialist programs each week," the Minister said.
There are 235 students at the school and numbers are expected to increase to 300 next year, even with the move of year 7s to secondary school.
