Heritage grants awarded across WA

The Heritage Grants Program for 2010-11 will see 18 grants totalling $670,700 to private owners of heritage properties throughout Western Australia.

The Heritage Grants Program for 2010-11 will see 18 grants totalling $670,700 to private owners of heritage properties throughout Western Australia.

Heritage Minister John Castrilli said four grants had been awarded to city owners and 14 in regional areas, including the Central Wheatbelt, Mid-West, North-West, South-West and Great Southern.

"Recipients of this year's Heritage Grants Program include Henton Cottage in Australind; Dempster Homestead in Esperance and the Shamrock Hotel in Northam," Mr Castrilli said.

"The grants will assist owners with the conservation of their heritage properties."

The Heritage Grants Program offers owners of buildings listed on the State Register of Heritage Places grants of $20,000 or more for conservation works.  Smaller grants of about $3,000 are awarded for the development of plans and documents prepared by heritage professionals to guide conservation works.

Priority is given to applicants who have already developed a conservation plan or demonstrated a need for urgent conservation works.

The Minister said that since 1997, 584 projects had received grants totalling more than $11.1million though the program administered by the Heritage Council of Western Australia.

The biggest grant awarded this year was $100,000 for urgent roofing work at Dempster Homestead in Esperance, one of the few remaining settler buildings in the district.

The 168-year-old Henton Cottage in Australind will also receive $80,000 to replace its shingle roof.  The cottage is one of three earliest remaining buildings from the original Australind town site.

Mr Castrilli congratulated the owners who, as custodians of WA's history, breathed new life into their heritage places through hard work and dedication.
