Heritage shines for Anzac Centenary

Twelve State Registered heritage buildings on Albany's Stirling Terrace will be revitalised for the 2014 Convoy Commemorative Event as part of the State Government's support for the Anzac Centenary commemorations.

  • Heritage grants for 12 Albany buildings in time for Anzac Centenary commemorations

  • Remaining applications for Heritage Grants Program close on July 18

Twelve State Registered heritage buildings on Albany's Stirling Terrace will be revitalised for the 2014 Convoy Commemorative Event as part of the State Government's support for the Anzac Centenary commemorations.

Making the announcement in Albany today, Heritage Minister Albert Jacob said the private owners of the commercial buildings would share in more than $298,000 through the $1.265million Heritage Grants Program.

"When combined with private owner contributions, almost $600,000 will be spent on conservation and restoration works to revitalise these 12 buildings for the Anzac Centenary commemorations," Mr Jacob said.

"These buildings date from the 1880s to 1911 when Stirling Terrace was the commercial and social centre of Albany, and the work will include painting and repairs to facades, brickwork, windows and, in some cases, the installation of new verandahs."

Places receiving grants include Dylan's on the Terrace; White Star Hotel; Royal George Hotel; the former National Bank; Everett Buildings (Albany Backpackers); Edward Barnett & Co (The Terrace Centre) and the former Drew Robinson and Co building (Rivers). The awarding of these special heritage grants means works will be completed in time for the Convoy Commemorative Event from October 31 to November 2.

"This important event, part of the national Anzac Centenary commemorations, marks the departure of Australian and New Zealand troops from Albany to the First World War," the Minister said.

"The Heritage Council had initially set aside $265,000 for Stirling Terrace but will cover the additional funding required for this special allocation so that it does not impact on this year's grants program.

"These works highlight the value of the Heritage Grants Program, which helps owners meet the costs associated with their heritage properties and benefits the wider community."

The remaining $1million from the Heritage Council's 2014-15 Heritage Grants Program will be available to private owners of other State Registered places.  Owners are required to match funds to projects and have until July 18, 2014 to submit their applications.
