The State Government has entered into an agreement with Saracen Properties to restore and redevelop the historic Royal George Hotel in East Fremantle, Lands Minister Terry Redman announced today.

"This agreement will see this historic building restored with the site developed benefiting the local community," Mr Redman said.

Saracen Properties; the Town of East Fremantle; and the State Government, through the Department of Lands and the State Heritage Office, will work together to unlock the potential for this historic building.

"The site will be leased with an option for freehold with a number of conditions, most importantly including the provision of a conservation management strategy, which must be satisfied before freehold tenure will be granted," the Minister said.

"Currently the redevelopment of the Royal George Hotel is to include hospitality ventures on the ground floor, with short stay accommodation on the first floor and the proposed construction of an apartment complex on the vacant land on the northern side of the property.

"The redevelopment of the site will see this glorious State heritage-listed two-storey gold-boom era hotel restored after years of lying empty.

"Highly valued by the local community, who fought to save it from demolition in the 1980s, its restoration will have a beneficial impact on the community and the historic George Street commercial precinct."

The apartment complex will be completed in parallel with the restoration of the Royal George Hotel building and will be subject to all necessary planning approvals.

The Royal George Hotel was included in the State Register of Heritage Places in 1998.
