Young adults living with disability in Perth will soon have access to the city's first purpose-built independent living facility designed specifically for young people, with construction of the innovative housing development on track to begin by December 2015.

Lands Minister Terry Redman today said the new 12-unit residence at The Vive estate in Craigie was the first of its kind in Perth and would offer young adults living with disability the opportunity to live in a custom-built home with age-appropriate supported living services.

"There is a shortage of age-appropriate supported care facilities in Perth and the State Government is delighted LandCorp is facilitating this innovative approach to delivering a positive social outcome," Mr Redman said.

"This new 12-unit residence at The Vive will offer young adults living with disability the opportunity to live in a custom-built home in a desirable metropolitan area while receiving the support they need in their everyday lives."

Located within LandCorp's The Vive estate, the new homes will be situated near a proposed central nursing/administration centre to monitor the wellbeing of residents and provide a meeting and recreational area.

Liber Victus Pty Ltd will develop the site and it is planned that Brightwater will provide the care package for residents at the facility.

The supported independent living facility is part of LandCorp's 10-hectare The Vive at Craigie estate on the former Craigie Senior High School site.

The Vive will eventually be home to about 380 people and will also include two houses taking part in the 'Cool Earth' demonstration project - measuring the effectiveness of a geoexchange heat pump system in a typical Western Australian home.
