Innovative aged care for Wheatbelt residents
$4.75 million investment to support ageing population in Cunderdin and Pingelly
Part of the $500 million Southern Inland Health Initiative, made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program
The Wheatbelt towns of Cunderdin and Pingelly have embraced a new model of housing and care for older people.
Health Minister John Day and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced a $4.75 million innovative age appropriate accommodation project as part of the $500 million Southern Inland Health Initiative, funded by Royalties for Regions.
Mr Day said the State's ageing population posed significant care challenges which could only be met through developing fresh approaches to providing aged housing and services.
"This new accommodation will be built, owned and managed by the shires of Cunderdin and Pingelly, and will be located adjacent to proposed new health centres in the towns and within walking distance of many community amenities," he said.
"A key aspect of this type of age-appropriate living is providing ease of navigation for older people who may have mobility issues. It must also provide visual cues and reminders to reduce confusion for people with dementia, and be located close to primary health services and social activities."
Mr Redman said Government projections showed the population of regional Western Australia aged 70 and over would double to 100,000 between 2011 and 2026.
"Without adequate facilities and services, older people in country WA might be forced to leave their community to access the care they need, resulting in significant personal, social and economic distress," he said.
"Investment in aged care infrastructure and services is fundamental to the ongoing viability and development of regional WA, and the State Government will continue to invest Royalties for Regions funds in key community projects that enable regions to grow."
Planning for the projects is about to commence, with construction of the housing due to start in early 2017 and be completed by the end of 2017.
