Cyber-crime, human trafficking, child sex abuse and homicide will be on the agenda as international experts in the field of victim-related research gather in Perth next month.

Attorney General Michael Mischin welcomed the 15th International Symposium of the World Society of Victimology being held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 5-9.

Mr Mischin said the State Government's sponsorship of the symposium reflected its strong and continuing commitment to recognise and support victims of crime.

"The symposium has attracted high-calibre keynote speakers from Australia and around the world, allowing Australian academics and practitioners to share their own knowledge, expertise and experiences," he said.

"Western Australian lawyer and human rights campaigner Rabia Siddique will be the opening speaker and provide her first-hand experience and perspective on issues affecting victims.

"The improvement of services to victims engaged in the Western Australian criminal justice system, and the role of the Victim-Offender Mediation Unit, will also be discussed.

"Smart phones, social media, sexting and new forms of victimisation, as well as the rise of technology as a means of inflicting domestic and sexual violence against women will be examined.

"This Government has been at the forefront of recognising the needs of victims of crime and in expanding the services available to them, and I will be pleased to learn how we can improve on what we have been doing to date.

"This event will be a unique opportunity for local practitioners to interact with international engagement with victimologists, the judiciary, policing, researchers, non-Government organisations and policy makers."
