Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls has welcomed the opening of the state-of-the-art Karratha leisure complex as an example of the success of the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.
The Minister attended the official opening of the $64million Karratha Leisureplex project today.
The complex received $22.8million from Royalties for Regions as part of the Pilbara Cities initiative, a further $870,116 from the Country Local Government Fund and $9million in funding from the Department of Education.
Mr Grylls said the Karratha Leisureplex would provide significant benefits for residents and ease pressure on existing recreational facilities in the Shire of Roebourne.
"This is a key example of how the Royalties for Regions program, is delivering the infrastructure and amenities that underpin sustainable communities," he said.
"People in Karratha and the region now have access to world-class recreation facilities.
"The Karratha Leisureplex offers a wide range of facilities for local schools, sports teams, families, small business owners and workers to enjoy."
Education Minister Peter Collier said students from Karratha Senior High School would benefit from the facility.
"The Department of Education established a shared arrangement with the Shire of Roebourne which will ensure students can widely use the great recreational facilities," Mr Collier said.
The Karratha Leisureplex features a premier aquatic precinct with children's splash playground; multi-purpose sports venues including fields, clubhouses and various indoor and outdoor courts and squash courts; fully equipped fitness centre and creche; cafes; function and meeting rooms; and office space.
