Kemerton industrial estate positioned to meet growing market demand

The delivery of strategic industrial land in the South-West recently reached a significant milestone with the South-West Region Planning Committee approving a new subdivision proposal at the Kemerton Industrial Park (KIP), near Bunbury.

The creation of 10 lots, ranging from five to 20 hectares (ha) is expected to meet demand for the next five to 10 years for land tailored to the needs of smaller-type heavy industry in the State's South-West region.

"Kemerton Industrial Park plays an important role in supporting the economic prosperity of the South-West region," Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said.

"While Western Australia has largely been shielded from turbulent economic conditions, we need to be prepared for the coming upswing in demand for high quality, well planned industrial land.

"The KIP is part of the State Government's long-term strategy to expand downstream processing of natural resources in the South-West and stimulate local jobs and business opportunities."

Located 17 kilometres from Bunbury, KIP was established in 1985 to cater for the future needs of the heavy industry sector and comprises a 2,110ha industrial core, a 293ha Support Industry Area and a 5,140ha buffer area. The new subdivision also includes two conservation lots of natural bushland and trees.

LandCorp, which is developing Kemerton in consultation with the Department of State Development, is working closely with relevant authorities including the Shire of Harvey; Department of Planning; Department of Environment and Conservation; Western Power; and the Water Corporation to finalise Certificates of Title for the recently approved lots.

The Minister said managed expansion of the estate has been subject to extensive studies during the past 20 years and its ongoing development required careful planning guided by a strategy plan, which was finalised this year after community consultation.

The South-West Region Planning Committee is responsible for planning matters in the region on behalf of the WA Planning Commission (WAPC) and comprises community, local government and WAPC representatives.

Subdivision earthworks at the KIP are expected to start in 2010 with lots available for development in 2011.
