Western Australia's longest-running windsurfing event, the Lancelin Ocean Classic - which runs for four days from tomorrow - will be bigger and better this year with the addition of a new kite surfing component.
Acting Tourism Minister John Day said kite surfing was an exciting sport, and it was great to see it feature alongside windsurfing, wave sailing and 25km marathon events in this year's Lancelin Ocean Classic.
"Now in its 28th year, the event keeps on growing, attracting thousands of competitors and spectators to the town of Lancelin," Mr Day said.
"The 2013 event includes some of the biggest names in windsurfing, such as world speed sailing record holder and the winner of a staggering 41 world championship titles, Björn Dunkerbeck; world number eight and last year's marathon winner, Peter Volwater; and Jesper Orth and Leo Sharpe from Australia, who will compete for a prize pool of $25,000."
The Minister said spectators could not only watch all the action from the shore, but also enjoy other activities such as jet-skiing demonstrations and other family entertainment.
"Lancelin is a water lovers' paradise with world-class wave and wind conditions, pristine beaches, sheltered fishing spots, amazing reefs and a string of shipwrecks along the coast. I encourage everyone to explore this extraordinary town," he said.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic is proudly supported by the State Government through Eventscorp.
Mr Day said the Government was committed to developing an exciting and vibrant annual calendar of sports, culinary, culture and arts events.
