Premier Colin Barnett has today announced that lot 302 Iris Avenue, Dalkeith has been sold with the proceeds to go towards the upgrade of the Sunset Heritage Precinct.

The 1,993sqm property - the site of the former Sunset Hospital matron's house - sold for $8.5 million. The property was purchased by Sultan Ibrahim Ismail of Johor.

"I am delighted to see this sale go ahead and looking forward to see work start at the Sunset site," the Premier said.

Mr Barnett said the sale proceeds would be utilised to fund the Stage 1 works of the Sunset Transformation Strategy which would include:

  • demolition of intrusive elements that includes some non-heritage buildings, walkways and verandah in-fills to enable the heritage buildings to be properly restored and removal of asbestos
  • building preservation works including roof maintenance, repainting, essential timber and masonry repairs
  • upgrade of power, water, sewerage, drainage and gas services into the site for connection to buildings as required to enable them to be adapted and tenanted for art, cultural and community uses
  • landscaping to the eastern parkland and Padbury view to enable public access and enjoyment of the grounds, upgraded public toilets, a new playground, barbecue and picnic facilities
  • ongoing maintenance works.

The Premier said the buildings would then be made available for lease to organisations such as not-for-profit or community-based groups and would be restored to heritage standards.

Finance Minister and Nedlands MLA Bill Marmion said future development of Lot 302 would need to be in accordance with the City of Nedlands Town Planning Scheme (zoned Residential 12.5) and the Heritage Agreement which includes design guidelines describing specific requirements in addition to the normal provisions of the City of Nedlands Town Planning Scheme.

"This signals a modest but positive beginning to the transformation of Sunset," Mr Marmion said.

"The Government's Sunset Transformation Strategy will conserve the site for arts, cultural, community and ancillary commercial purposes."
