List of unclaimed money published
The Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) has released the latest update of the State's 'Register of Unclaimed Money'.
Minister Assisting the Treasurer Bill Marmion said that in the past year alone, DTF had received unclaimed money notifications totalling $5.25million.
"This unclaimed money comes from a variety of sources, such as the proceeds of unpresented cheques, dividends, real estate bonds and deposits," Mr Marmion said.
"There is no time limit for a person claiming their money, but they are required to prove they are the rightful payee."
People should check the unclaimed money liftout published in today's The West Australian or visit the DTF website at http://www.money.dtf.wa.gov.au
The Minister said the liftout contained details of 3,000 amounts of $100 or more, while the website listed all amounts brought to account under the Unclaimed Money Act 1990.
"The website contains details of more than 315,000 companies, organisations and individuals who are owed money," he said.
"Since this time last year, approximately 2,000 claims worth nearly $1.3million have been collected from DTF and the companies concerned."
Mr Marmion said the department did not deal with money from bank accounts, life insurance, company shares or superannuation.
Information on superannuation can be found at the Australian Taxation Office website http://www.ato.gov.au/superseeker, where people can search a national register of superannuation accounts.
Information regarding bank accounts, matured life insurance policies and some share holdings is available on the Australian Securities and Investment Commission website http://www.fido.gov.au
