Local Government and Communities merge

The State Government has announced that the Department of Local Government and the Department for Communities will merge.

  • New Department of Local Government and Communities to be created
  • Merger will lead to more collaboration at a local level

  • Part of changes to improve the delivery of services to the WA community

The State Government has announced that the Department of Local Government and the Department for Communities will merge.

The merger is one of the sweeping changes to a range of Government departments which will improve the delivery of services to the Western Australian community, announced today by Premier Colin Barnett.

Local Government and Community Services Minister Tony Simpson said the creation of a single Department of Local Government and Communities was a logical step to encourage better collaboration to deliver services at a local level.

"Given their impact on grass roots communities, it is a logical and positive step to merge the departments," Mr Simpson said.

"By combining these two departments, we can drive a concerted effort to help families and individuals throughout the State access the services they need and develop their communities.

"I am proud to have the opportunity to encourage collaboration at a local level between Government agencies, not-for-profit groups and councils.

"Most, if not all, West Australians will benefit, at some stage during their lives, from the work of these staff to build strong, vibrant communities."

The Minister said this and the other changes announced today would improve service delivery, streamline processes, ensure better transparency and bring greater efficiencies to many Government operations.
