Local skaters flip out over new park

Fast becoming the place to ride, jump and skate into summer, Geraldton's Wonthella Skate Park was officially opened today by Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies.

An $800,000 refurbishment and extension means novice skaters through to advanced riders can enjoy challenges such as grind rails, ramps, quarterpipe runs, banks, ledges and steps, and the challenging 2.4 meter bowl.

"Wonthella is the largest and the most popular skate park in Geraldton and is located in the main sporting precinct," Ms Davies said.

"The State Government was pleased to assist this expansion, with $183,333 coming from the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund and $310,546 from Royalties for Regions. The City of Greater Geraldton funded $306,121.

"With summer around the corner, this park is suitable for all ages and abilities on skateboards, scooters, bikes and roller blades.  This is the perfect place for a family to be active together and for mums and dads to enjoy watching their children try out new tricks and generally being active outside.

"Skate parks also provide a great hub for young people to meet friends but also remain active while doing something fun and challenging."

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the new Wonthella Skate Park would ensure local residents have access to contemporary and diverse recreation facilities.

"Infrastructure such as this provide opportunities for community engagement and interaction which are critical to building sustainable communities in regional Western Australia," Mr Redman said.

"Royalties for Regions is investing in a range of community services and infrastructure to support a better quality of life for our regional communities."

The upgrade has integrated the park into the streetscape and improved the amenity and variety for skaters.  The Wonthella Skate Park extension covers about 700sqm with a new section added as well as the refurbishment of the existing park.
