Market City turns 21

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today joined growers, wholesalers and retailers to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the opening of Market City in Canning Vale.

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today joined growers, wholesalers and retailers to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the opening of Market City in Canning Vale.

Canning Vale was chosen as the site for Perth's main fresh produce market in 1989 after the decision was made to relocate from West Perth.

"Since then, Market City has assumed a critical role in the marketing and distribution of fresh produce in Western Australia," Mr Redman said.

"More than $350million worth of fruit and vegetables are traded through the Central Trading Area of the markets every year.

"It really is an eye-opener to come down to Market City on any given morning and see the frenetic activity that goes on, and the amazing range of local WA produce that is available."

The Minister said the State Government's investment in expanding horticultural regions like the Ord, West Kimberley, Gascoyne and the South-West would mean even greater choice for consumers into the future.

"Because of the range of climatic zones in WA, there is the potential for the year-round production and supply of a wide range of fruit and vegetables," he said.

"The millions of dollars being invested in the expansion of Ord River and Carnarvon irrigation networks have created great potential for produce from the north to fill Market City."

In congratulating the Perth Market Authority for reaching the 21-year milestone, Mr Redman also acknowledged the important role Market City played in the local community.

"Along with the fresh produce at Market City there are also specialty shops, restaurants and the popular Sunday Markets," he said.
