Media response - Opal Fuel
Questions asked by: The West Australian and ABC Kimberley
Subject: release of a Senate Committee report on Opal Fuel and associated issues.
Minister's response:
"I welcome this Senate committee report on petrol sniffing strategies around the country and will be very carefully considering each of the recommendations made.
The states are working with the Commonwealth Government on a holistic approach in terms of strategies and supportive initiatives that might assist in addressing this problem.
We will wait to see the outcomes of this national approach before considering what WA specific legislative changes might be necessary.
It is pleasing to note in the report that unlike in other jurisdictions there were no WA retailers within the Petrol Sniffing Strategy Zone who did not stock opal fuel.
It is also good to see that the rollout of Opal fuel implemented by the Australian Government has been extended to the East Kimberley as part of the 8-point Petrol Sniffing Strategy in the Central Desert area.
I acknowledge the delays we have had in the provision of alcohol and other drug services for young people within the petrol sniffing strategy zone, and I understand this has largely been attributable to difficulties attracting and retaining staff.
However action has already been taken to address this problem, and the Drug and Alcohol Office has continued to offer training and support to local agencies."
