Media response - Sheep Mulesing
Response to Jodie Thomson - The West Australian
Subject: Sheep Mulesing
I remain committed to working with the WA wool industry to meet the 2010 deadline to end mulesing. However, I understand the challenges faced by producers.
While mulesing is a painful practice, a fly-struck sheep also suffers extreme pain.
Ending mulesing is important for the wool industry, not only in terms of animal welfare, but also to ensure the reputation of WA as a reliable and ethical source of wool products.
Mulesing ceased on all Department of Agriculture research stations in April this year. Individual research stations are investigating alternative methods to mulesing and will report back to producers with the results.
