Media response - Subiaco Oval
Question asked by: The West Australian
Subject: Subiaco Oval
Question: How does the Government respond to Opposition claims that the fact that Subiaco does not meet the 'Green Guide' guidelines for Stadia design means the State needs a new football stadium?
Minister's response:
"The "Green Guide' recommendations were not in place when Subiaco Oval was built, as I understand it they are United Kingdom building guidelines that have been used by Australian designers since the Olympic Stadium was commissioned. They are not legislated operational guidelines and most Australian sporting venues built prior to 1996 would not meet all of the 'Green Guide' requirements.
"Subiaco Oval meets some of the Green Guide requirements but not all and this is one of the reasons why I requested the Department of Sport and Recreation to commission a structural assessment report on Subiaco Oval in December and I expect to receive that report next month.
"The Major Stadia Taskforce worked to "Green Guide" requirements and they were included in the plans for a new stadium presented in the Taskforce report.
"The Liberal-National Government recognises the need for a new stadium for Perth however the Government has made it clear that the project will not be actively considered for two years as major health infrastructure such as the new children's hospital will be the key focus during that time."
