The Local Government Advisory Board has made two merger recommendations after finalising its inquiry into two proposals for amalgamations and boundary amendments in the Mid-West.
The first recommendation is for Mingenew, Morawa, Perenjori and Three Springs shires to form a new local government - the Shire of Billeranga - from July 1, 2011.
The second is for the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Shire of Mullewa to amalgamate, becoming the City of Greater Geraldton from July 1, 2011.
Local Government Minister John Castrilli said the board had carefully assessed submissions made on the proposals from local governments, electors and other interested parties. Issues included community interest, financial factors, demographic trends and the history of the area.
"In both cases, it found amalgamation would create a stronger, more responsive local government that would deliver significant benefits to the communities involved," Mr Castrilli said.
"I am very pleased the amalgamations proposals have been endorsed by the Local Government Advisory Board.
"I also congratulate both groups for achieving this milestone and offer my full support as they move forward with the amalgamation process."
The board also considered two proposals for amalgamations and boundary amendments involving the City of Geraldton-Greenough, the Shire of Mullewa and the Shire of Chapman Valley before deciding on its recommendation.
Upon consideration of both proposals, the board recommended an alternative proposal did not include the Shire of Chapman Valley.
Electors of affected local governments may now request to the Minister for a poll on the recommendations which will provide the community with a further opportunity to participate in the process.
A period of one month is provided from the date of publication of the notice for a poll to be demanded. Following that period, the Minister will then determine whether to accept or reject the board's recommendation.
