Midland to be centre of region's disability services

Disability Services Minister Helen Morton today officially opened the new Midland Local Area Coordination (LAC) office, providing a stronger base to access services for people with disability in the eastern hills region.

Disability Services Minister Helen Morton today officially opened the new Midland Local Area Coordination (LAC) office, providing a stronger base to access services for people with disability in the eastern hills region.

The LAC office merges previous Kalamunda, Midland and Mundaring services and will assist people with disabilities to plan, organise and access support and services which improve their participation in and contribution to their local community.

The new Midland LAC office has a team of eight local area coordinators who will visit hundreds of people with disabilities living in the City of Swan and the shires of Kalamunda and Mundaring.

Mrs Morton said it was estimated the region's population would increase from 209,000 people to about 300,000 over the next 20 years.

"That means the demand for disability services will also grow and we are pleased this central service has been established and is here to reach out to people in these communities as the need for services expands," she said.

"The Disability Services Commission already has a productive and supportive relationship with all the local governments and government departments in this region as well as local businesses and community groups and people with disability, their families and carers."

The Minister said the commission looked forward to continuing this positive relationship, working together to improve the lives of people with disability, their families and carers and to ensure fair and equitable access to everything that contributes to a good life in this region.

The Midland LAC is located is at 2 Keane Street in Midland, near the Midland Gate Shopping Centre.
