Miners' memorial marks one-year milestone
Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion said this weekend's first anniversary of the Kalgoorlie miners' memorial was a poignant reminder of the importance of safety in the mining industry.
"Sadly, there have been two names added to the memorial wall during the past 12 months," Mr Marmion said.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of these two men, and all the men and women who have paid the ultimate price in building Western Australia's mining industry.
"After more than 120 years of Goldfields mining, there are almost 1,500 names listed on the memorial.
"It is important that the lessons from these tragedies are not forgotten, but are used to improve safety across our industry."
The Minister said employers, mine staff and State Government agencies all played crucial roles in ensuring saving lives remained the number one priority.
"As I have said before, every mine worker deserves to come home alive," he said.
"While there will always be inherent risks in mining, these risks should not equate to harm.
"I was honoured to open the memorial last year, and during this weekend's anniversary I ask everyone to once more pledge to protect each other."
Department of Mines and Petroleum Goldfields staff will attend today's commemorative service.
