More affordable housing options for Onslow workers
Service workers in Onslow will now have access to more affordable rental housing following the construction of 12 two-bedroom homes by the Department of Housing.
Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the additional interim housing, funded by the State Government's Royalties for Regions - Housing Our Workers program, was in response to a high rental market in Onslow and was critical in ensuring important services remained available to the local community.
"Strong economic growth from resources projects, coupled with an already stretched-to-capacity private rental market, has resulted in significant need for additional affordable housing in the town," Mr Marmion said.
"The median private rental for Onslow has risen to almost $1,800 a week, which is unaffordable for workers on low-to-moderate incomes.
"The $4.83million project will provide subsidised housing for up to five years, while other long-term housing options are being sourced."
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the accommodation was part of a strategy to provide more affordable housing to help support the continued success of the many hard-working businesses which serviced regional communities.
"Resource sector activity in the area is expected to triple Onslow's population by 2016 and while there are plans to create more affordable housing options in the town, this project is a welcome response to a critical need in this community," Mr Redman said.
The allocation process is ongoing and businesses and individuals are encouraged to express their interest through the Department of Housing's website in the event of any future vacancies in this housing project or through other housing programs in the town designed for service workers.
