More schools to receive flashing 40kmh signs
- Another 66 WA schools to get electronic flashing lights to highlight 40kmh speed zones
171 schools already protected by flashing electronic school zone signs
$36m to ensure all approximately 1,070 school zones will be covered in the next four years (approx. 630 in the metropolitan area and 440 in the regions)
An additional 66 West Australian schools will have electronic flashing speed zone signs installed over the next seven months.
Transport Minister Troy Buswell today released the 2013-14 list of schools to receive the safety lights, which was part of an election commitment to install electronic flashing speed signs at every school with a 40kmh school zone across the State.
"The State Government has made road safety one of its top priorities and accordingly, we have increased the rate of installation of these signs," Mr Buswell said.
"These lights will improve safety for children as they are an excellent way to raise drivers' awareness that they are entering a different speed zone and to make sure they slow down.
"Today's list of schools shows the State Government is committed to installing these signs at every, approximately 1,070, public and private schools with a 40kmh school zone across the State over the next four years."
This year's program will mean 237 school zones will be protected by the flashing lights across Western Australia. The boost to the flashing lights program has been made possible by the allocation of $2.5million from the Road Trauma Trust Account.
"Funding from this account are the proceeds from all red light and speed camera collections which we are using to increase the safety of children attending school throughout the State," the Minister said.
"It is not possible to install the signs at all schools in the short term, but the priority is being given to those locations which experience the greatest potential hazards."
Last year the Liberal National Government doubled its funding and installation rate for the flashing signs at school zones.
