Mount Lawley Primary School rises from the ashes
Rebuilt Mount Lawley Primary School opens at original Second Avenue site
New school replaces historic building devastated by fire in July 2012
Mount Lawley Primary School once again stands with pride in its original location in Second Avenue, Premier Colin Barnett said today.
On the first morning of the 2015 school year, Mr Barnett and Education Minister Peter Collier officially opened the $11.25 million rebuilt school, which incorporates part of the original 1902 school facade.
"The community was devastated by the terrible fire which ravaged the school in the 2012 winter school holidays," he said.
"Eighty-five per cent of the buildings were lost with just a part of the entrance portico and two new buildings left relatively intact.
"Everything else was lost - not only buildings, but students' work, teachers' resources and irreplaceable memorabilia from the past 100 years."
Mr Collier said the rebuilt school was developed after extensive consultation with the school and local community.
"While it was imperative to preserve past traditions, the community also resolved to build for the students' future, and the result is an outstanding facility," he said.
The school features the latest technology in a two-storey, 12 classroom block. There is an art room, covered assembly area, dental therapy centre and a refurbished library.
