Multi-million-dollar Lake Gwelup Primary School rebuild on track
Construction of the $13million replacement Lake Gwelup Primary School is months ahead of schedule with students moving into some of the new buildings this week.
The school was one of 20 new or replacement schools worth a total of $521.9million, being built in the next two years by the State Government.
Education Minister Liz Constable said the new facilities including an administration area, two classroom blocks, a two-room early childhood block, and staff, visitor and parent parking areas had made a great difference.
"Lake Gwelup Primary School first opened in 1914 in what was then a semi-rural area known for its market gardens," Dr Constable said.
"The school has seen a steady increase in enrolments in recent years due to new subdivisions.
"The existing facilities are old, requiring extensive maintenance and transportable classrooms to cater for its burgeoning student population."
Demolition of the old buildings started in the July school holidays.
Stages two and three include a general teaching block, library, covered assembly area with canteen, music room and gardening facilities to be completed ahead of schedule next February.
The school oval will be refurbished and new hard courts installed for sport and recreation.
"In recognition of the history of the school, an old wooden classroom which has been on the site since 1914 is being retained," the Minister said.
Lake Gwelup Primary School currently has 422 students from kindergarten to year 7, and has an ethos of encouraging personal excellence in academic, physical and social endeavours.
A five-room early childhood centre was completed last year under the Federal Government's Building the Education Revolution program.
