Multi-million dollar expansion for Mandurah Community Health Centre
Mandurah residents are set to benefit from the expansion of local health services with the State Government undertaking a $3.4million redevelopment of the Mandurah Community Health Centre.
Health Minister Dr Kim Hames announced today that the existing community health centre in Mandurah, situated adjacent to the Peel Health Campus, would be expanded to add new and increased current health services at the centre.
"The expansion of the Mandurah Community Health Centre will see community health services offered to people in the one location," Dr Hames said.
"Currently the centre offers a range of community health services, including physiotherapy; occupational therapy; social work; school and child health nursing; speech therapy and immunisation services. By expanding the centre, other health services can be relocated to the community health centre site.
"Bringing these services together will better meet the needs of the local community enabling them to access community health services in a central location."
The Minister said a new Aboriginal Health Centre would be established at the site, including a primary health care service.
"The local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community currently experience difficulties in accessing mainstream specialised primary health services," he said.
"This new service will ensure that they are able to access culturally appropriate health care in purpose-built facilities close to where they live."
In addition to the new Aboriginal Health Centre, the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme will be relocated to the current community health centre site.
The Family and Child Health Service, currently located on Ormsby Terrace, will also be relocated and join existing adult and child services at the central location.
The project will proceed to tender this month, with the expansion due to be completed by December 2009.
Existing community health services will continue to be available to local residents during the expansion process.
