More than 140 local, interstate and international elite cyclists will compete in the Woodside Tour de Perth, which starts today on Rottnest Island.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said 11 interstate and international teams had travelled to Western Australia to take part in the four-day event.

"The Woodside Tour de Perth has been elevated to a national level and is the first event of the 2013 Subaru National Road Series," Dr Hames said.

"This is Australia's premier road cycling series and one of the main features of the Australian road racing calendar.

"It is great to see this national competition taking place in Western Australia and it will no doubt enhance our reputation in the professional cycling world."

The Woodside Tour de Perth will feature four stages to take place around Perry Lakes and Bold Park, through Kalamunda and the Perth hills and on Rottnest Island.

It has attracted riders from across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, France and South Africa.

The Minister said the Woodside Tour de Perth would be complemented by the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) Perth 2013 event, which offered international, interstate and local cyclists the chance to qualify for the UWCT Masters Final.

"The UWCT event has become a popular feature of the cycling calendar, attracting more than 390 amateur cyclists last year," he said.

"This year riders have the added attraction of racing the same course as the professionals."

Dr Hames said the State Government was proud to support the events through Eventscorp.
