The multi-million dollar redevelopment of Barbagallo Raceway is on schedule to be finished in time for the Perth round of the V8 Supercars Series in May.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron today inspected the construction work as he launched the 2012 Tradingpost Perth Challenge.

"Motorsport fans will see a 'new look' Barbagallo Raceway when they visit for the V8 Supercars on May 4 to 6," Mr Waldron said.

"The State Government recognised in 2010 that there was an urgent need to improve facilities here at Barbagallo and committed $15million to these redevelopments.

"The drivers, their crews, race officials, the media and the public will notice big improvements."

Current construction work includes an in-field pit lane and garage facility; a pedestrian bridge to link the in-field and out-field; and a new out-field facility on the western side comprising driver briefing room and media interviewing area, media room, stewards' facilities, race control, timing control, commentating and spectator viewing area, and raceway administration facilities.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said last year about 43,000 people attended Barbagallo Raceway for the three days of the Tradingpost Perth Challenge and organisers were aiming to top that this May.

"There's another great line-up of world-class motorsport over the three days with four national support categories, the V8 Supercar Series, Porsche City Index Carrera Cup, Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series and QBE Australian Superbike Championships," Dr Hames said.

"Thanks to the Public Transport Authority, public transport is again included in the price of the ticket, with regular shuttle services between the raceway and Clarkson train station."
