A new Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centre will be opened in Cannington later this year.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the Cannington centre will replace the ageing Welshpool DVS centre and will focus on offering better customer service.

"The new 1,200sqm facility will see an increase in floor space, by 478sqm, and more counter positions located within a friendly and fresh environment.  The site will be Wi-Fi compatible to allow customers to use mobile devices for transactions," Mr Buswell said.

"The State Government is committed to improving and providing better customer service and options when it comes to driver and vehicle services - this new centre is part of delivering on that commitment."

The Minister said the new centre had been custom designed and was conveniently located in the Primewest Cannington shopping precinct on the corner of William Street and Albany Highway in Cannington, with ample parking and access.

The Department of Transport is tendering for the fit-out of the Cannington centre, which is expected to see all existing Welshpool DVS counter and driver assessment functions relocated to Cannington by August 2013.

The Welshpool site will be refurbished to accommodate other DVS services such as vehicle inspections, which will operate under a booking system by the end of this month.  This is a change from the existing first-come, first-served basis.
