New Rockingham Waterfront Village Square provides community hub
The Rockingham Waterfront Village project moved a step closer to completion today, with the official opening of the Village Square.
Planning and Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Village Square completed the transformation of the former Rockingham Oval into the Village Green.
"LandCorp has worked closely with the community and the City of Rockingham to not only provide land, but to build a long-term asset for the whole community to enjoy," Mr Day said.
"The Village Square will be a cultural hub for Rockingham and the region, offering space for art displays, social events and exhibitions of local talent."
At 3,000sqm in total, the paved, landscaped area is large enough to host exhibitions, community markets and fetes.
The outdoor venue showcases two major sculptures developed by local artists under the guidance of highly-regarded WA sculptor Jon Denaro, and commissioned by the City of Rockingham.
The Minister said the skilfully created pieces reflected Rockingham's history. The first, a five metre high billboard sculpture occupies prime position within the square while the second, a hull-shaped sculpture, sits at the square entrance and symbolises the city's maritime history.
"Public art helps communities reflect on their character and beginnings," he said.
"The Village Square's location, next to the recently opened Gary Holland Community Centre, makes it possible for major community events to be held both indoor and outdoor."
The Waterfront Village reflects the strong partnership between the State Government and the City of Rockingham and is a key project of the Rockingham Kwinana Development Office.
Mr Day also announced that MLC elect for the South Metropolitan Region Phil Edman had been appointed as the new chair of the Premier's Rockingham Planning and Development Taskforce. Other new taskforce members will be appointed early in the new year.
