New addition to WA District Court

Magistrate Vicki Stewart has been appointed a judge of the District Court of Western Australia.

Magistrate Vicki Stewart has been appointed a judge of the District Court of Western Australia.

Attorney General Michael Mischin said since being appointed to the Magistrates Court in 2003, Ms Stewart had been a highly capable and diligent magistrate.

"Magistrate Stewart has served in a variety of roles, including as the Drug Court Magistrate from 2008 to 2013, and more recently in the Mental Health Court Diversion and Support program," Mr Mischin said.

"Her professionalism and integrity are well regarded among the legal fraternity and I am confident she will be an asset to the District Court."

Ms Stewart began her legal career at the then Crown Law Department in 1982.

She was a solicitor and counsel at the Crown Law Department until 1991, when she became a Crown Prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions until 1997.

From 1997 to 2003, Ms Stewart was the Director of Legal and Legislative Services at the Department of Health.

She will continue her role at the Magistrates Court until her appointment at the District Court begins on October 28.
