New approach to parking permits for people with disability

Parking permits for ACROD bays are being revamped nationally to give permit holders interstate access to benefits.

Parking permits for ACROD bays are being revamped nationally to give permit holders interstate access to benefits.

Disability Services Minister Simon O'Brien said making provisions of disability parking across Australia more consistent would provide many positive outcomes for permit holders.

This included assisting people with a mobility disability to access the benefits of parking schemes when travelling interstate.

Local Government Minister John Castrilli said permits had been redesigned and would be more durable with additional security features.

"In Western Australia, a hook design will be used so it can be hung from a rear vision mirror once the vehicle is parked or can be displayed on the front dashboard of the vehicle," Mr Castrilli said.

"The new permit design is larger and the permit number and expiry date will be clearly visible to parking enforcement officers."

Delivery of new permits in WA begins today and all WA permit holders will be using the new permit by March, 2011.

Mr O'Brien said National Disability Services WA, through the ACROD Parking Program, would continue to administer the disability parking program in WA.
