  • Extra 200 parking bays to be constructed at Bassendean Station
  • New bays added as part of the $8.35million car park upgrade program

  • More than 4,800 new car bays added at train stations, exceeding initial commitment

Work started last month to add more than 200 new car bays to Bassendean Station, taking the number of parking spots at the station from 239 to more than 450.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said work on the $1.8million car park extension started last month and was expected to be completed by August.

"The Liberal National Government's investment in transport infrastructure is one of its top priorities," Mr Nalder said.

"We understand that the expansion of public transport infrastructure needs to be balanced to support all modes of transport. This will ensure better access is provided to all types of travellers, including pedestrians, cyclists, commuters who are dropped off at the station as well as people who park their cars at stations."

The Minister said the Liberal National Government 2008 election commitment to deliver 3,000 additional parking bays on the Mandurah and Joondalup lines, as part of its $50million Better Transport System project, had been exceeded.

This commitment was expanded in 2010 to include additional bays at stations on the Armadale, Midland and Fremantle lines as part of the $8.35million Car Park Upgrade program.

To date, more than 4,800 new parking bays have been constructed at train stations across the Perth metropolitan area.

"In addition to these, extra parking bays have also been added to some stations through upgrade projects primarily aimed at achieving disability compliance," Mr Nalder said.

Four new disabled bays will be constructed to take the total number of disabled bays at Bassendean Station to 10.

The Minister urged commuters to be patient during construction and redevelopment works.

"As well as adding more parking bays to the network, improvements have been made to CCTV, lighting, passenger set down and pick up areas, footpaths and the introduction of new bike shelters at many of the stations involved in both the Better Transport System and Car Park Upgrade projects," he said.

"These projects have been enormously successful, however the Government understands the space for further expansion of ground level parking areas at stations is finite."

Mr Nalder said planning works for the new $47million multi-storey car park at Edgewater - which will add more than 560 bays on the Joondalup Line - were well advanced, with the project tender to be released in the near future.
