New courthouse opens in Fitzroy Crossing
- $5.1 million project completed on time and on budget
- Part of Liberal National Government's investment in regional justice facilities
Justice in the West Kimberley will now be served in the new Fitzroy Crossing courthouse which was officially opened today by Attorney General Michael Mischin.
Mr Mischin said the new building, at the corner of Fallon and McLarty roads, was adjacent to the recently completed police station and would replace the previous ageing court built in the 1970s.
"I am delighted Fitzroy Crossing now has a modern, culturally appropriate centre for the administration of justice and other services. This is a facility of which the people of the West Kimberley can be proud," he said.
The courthouse waiting area displays a mural representing the work of 17 Aboriginal artists from six language groups -.Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Nyikina, Walmajarri, Wangkatjungka and Ngarinyin.
The air conditioned facility has a magistrate's court, four interview rooms, a secure police station-court custody link and several landscaped outdoor areas.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the courthouse was another example of the State Government's Royalties for Regions program delivering infrastructure benefits to regional Western Australia.
"The original court building was old, had asbestos cladding and could no longer be used for any court business because it did not meet modern building standards," he said.
"There has been strong support and co-operation with Fitzroy Crossing's Aboriginal community to ensure the design of the new facility incorporated features suited to local needs.
"I am pleased to see Royalties for Regions contributing to the provision of essential social services in regional Western Australia."
