Dongara District High School has been almost totally rebuilt as part of a State Government $30million capital works investment.

Premier Colin Barnett and Education Minister Peter Collier today fulfilled a pre-election commitment when they officially opened the new buildings at the Mid-West school.

Mr Barnett said the Government had pledged to provide upgraded facilities after the school outgrew its old facilities due to a local population increase.

"The opening of these wonderful new buildings marks a new chapter for the Dongara community, which has worked tirelessly to see it become a reality," the Premier said.

"The outdated buildings from the 1970s have been replaced by top-class, modern classrooms that incorporate all the latest technologies, air-cooling and interactive whiteboards. As well as catering for the growth in enrolments over the last decade, this major revamp gives regional students the opportunity to learn in a high-quality environment."

Mr Collier said the new buildings included three new four-classroom primary teaching blocks; a five-classroom secondary block with IT and media classroom; an administration block with staff room and conference room; a library and canteen.

"Specialist secondary facilities have also been significantly enhanced with the addition of a science laboratory and preparation area, art studio and wood and metal workshop," the Minister said.

"As a school with a strong focus on vocational education, these new learning spaces give students more opportunities to develop their skills as they prepare for further training and the workplace. From plastic moulding machines in the design and technology room to pottery wheels in the art room, students are working in facilities unsurpassed across the country."

Other new facilities include a refurbished, covered assembly area; staff and student change rooms; sports store; covered basketball court; and covered primary playground.
