New intersection opens in Port Kennedy

A new seagull shaped intersection at the junction of Ennis Avenue and Port Kennedy Drive in the City of Rockingham will greatly improve road safety.

A new seagull shaped intersection at the junction of Ennis Avenue and Port Kennedy Drive in the City of Rockingham will greatly improve road safety.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the $3 million improvements funded by the State Government at this traffic black spot would eliminate this reputation.

"The intersection now includes traffic signals on Ennis Avenue northbound to control all right-turn movements and give priority to Ennis Avenue traffic," Mr Nalder said.

"The design allows southbound traffic on Ennis Avenue to remain free-flowing but includes a reduced speed limit and advanced warning flashing signs on the northbound approach to Port Kennedy Drive.

"The deceleration lane on Ennis Avenue southbound has also been extended by 400 metres and street lighting upgraded.  Closed circuit television cameras will be fitted to ensure that the intersection can be monitored by the Main Roads' Traffic Operations Centre in Perth."

The Minister said the upgrade would significantly reduce the number of right-angle crashes at the intersection, which in its previous configuration was ranked third in the metropolitan area for serious crashes.

Fact File

  • In the five years to December 31, 2014, 63 crashes were recorded at this intersection resulting in two fatalities and 12 people seriously injured
  • Of the total, 38 were right-angle crashes and 24 were rear-end crashes
  • Funding was provided under the State's Black Spot program
  • The modifications are similar to those recently completed at the intersection of Ennis Avenue and Willmott Drive
