New judge for the Supreme Court of Western Australia
Attorney General Christian Porter today announced the appointment of Mr Graeme Harold Murphy SC as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
"Mr Murphy's vast career spans many facets of the law, including trade practices, administration, maritime, medical negligence, and contractual, statutory and constitutional interpretation," Mr Porter said.
"He has specialised in commercial litigation, principally in banks, mining companies and other public companies for liquidators, receivers and administrators and he has worked not only in Australia but throughout Europe."
Mr Murphy holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Sydney.
During the early years of his career in the 1980s, Mr Murphy was employed as a solicitor; firstly with the firm now known as Phillips Fox and then with Blake Dawson, where he dealt with commercial, insurance and medical negligence litigation.
In 1985, Mr Murphy moved to London where he dealt with commercial and corporate litigation and international arbitrations, working throughout Europe with the firm Clifford Chance.
On his return to Australia in 1988, Mr Murphy became a partner of Blake Dawson, working in Sydney. He moved to Perth in 1989 and continued his partnership with Blake Dawson, acting in corporate takeover litigation, mining litigation, and as junior counsel for the liquidators of Rothwells in the Supreme and Federal Courts.
In 1994, Mr Murphy joined the Independent Bar and in 2003, he was appointed Senior Counsel.
"Mr Murphy has also taken an active role in WA Bar Chambers, as a Director and Secretary for several years and a member of their Disciplinary Committee," the Minister said.
"His contribution to young lawyers should also be commended. He has presented many courses and training seminars through the Law Society.
"Mr Murphy commences his new role on April 28 and his knowledge and experience across many areas of law will be welcomed to the Supreme Court of Western Australia."
