New leadership team for Gold Corporation
- Premier appoints chairman and CEO of Gold Corporation
- Gold Corporation operates the Perth Mint
Premier Colin Barnett has today announced the appointment of a new chairman and chief executive officer of Gold Corporation, which operates the Perth Mint.
Donald Mackay-Coghill, formerly the chief executive officer of Gold Corporation for 17 years until 2003, will assume the role of chairman from July this year.
Richard Hayes, currently chief financial officer and deputy chief executive officer of Gold Corporation, will also take over as CEO from July 1, replacing Edward Harbuz who has been at the helm since July 2003.
Mr Hayes' appointment, which follows an extensive national recruitment campaign, is for a three-year term, with the option to renew for two years at the discretion of the board. He has a degree in Commerce and a Master of Business Administration.
Gold Corporation operates the Perth Mint which is one of the world's leading precious metals businesses. The Mint has been refining gold since 1899 and has manufactured and marketed the Australian Government's official bullion coins since 1986. It also designs and makes a big range of collectable and commemorative coins.
The refinery refines more newly mined gold than any other refinery in the world. The Mint is also one of Perth's favorite tourist attractions.
Gold Corporation's profits are linked to the price of precious metals and it pays a dividend to the State Government.
The Premier said Mr Mackay-Coghill was perfectly qualified to take the role of chairman, having spent his entire career in the gold industry and related industries.
"Don brings a great deal of experience and expertise to the position of chairman of the board," Mr Barnett said.
"He has worked in gold and silver refining, minting, marketing and retailing in South Africa, London and Western Australia.
"Under his guidance as CEO, the Perth Mint was reborn as an internationally renowned specialist precious metals mint."
"I would also like to thank Mr Harbuz for his 12 years of service to Gold Corporation and wish him well on his retirement at the end of this month."
