New management plan for Lane Poole Reserve
- State Government releases management plan for Lane Poole Reserve
- The reserve is undergoing a $1.6million campground upgrade
The unique pools, rivers and forests of Lane Poole Reserve in the South-West will be better protected under a new management plan released today by the State Government.
Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the reserve near Dwellingup, was one of the State's most popular recreation and tourism destinations, with an average of 175,000 visitors each year.
"Lane Poole Reserve is ideal for canoeing, swimming, fishing, bushwalking, bird watching, horse riding, mountain biking and recreational driving," Mr Marmion said.
"The reserve also has sites of significance for Aboriginal people and for people interested in the history of the timber industry."
One of the main features of the new management plan is the proposal to increase Lane Poole Reserve's total area to 75,806ha from 51,643ha.
"By strategically increasing the size of the reserve, we are aiming to deliver more effective catchment protection, fire management, visitor access, nature conservation and forest management," Mr Marmion said.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the reserve was currently undergoing a $1.6million campground upgrade funded by Royalties for Regions and Alcoa Australia.
"The new campground under construction near the existing Baden Powell campground will include a sealed access road incorporating 60 sites providing access for tents, camper trailers, small caravans and group camping facilities," Mr Grylls said.
The new management plan was prepared by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) on behalf of the Conservation Commission of WA, and in consultation with the Lane Poole Reserve Community Advisory Committee. DEC received 46 submissions during the draft plan's public comment period.
