New sporting facilities for Newman community
- $4.855million Royalties for Regions funding for Newman sport
- Lighting and fourth playing field for Capricorn Sporting Precinct
- Boomerang Oval to receive new amenities
The Newman community will enjoy improved sporting facilities at the Capricorn Sporting Precinct and Boomerang Oval, after receiving $4.855million in Royalties for Regions funding.
The total project cost is $8.5million, with the remaining funding provided by the Shire of East Pilbara and contributions from local industry and community groups.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said provision of sport and recreation facilities was a key component of Newman's community infrastructure.
Mr Grylls said the project involved building a junior sports hub on the Emu Park playing area and the existing hockey fields at Newman's biggest sporting area, the Capricorn Sporting Precinct.
"A new field for cricket will be provided, and lighting will be installed at two of the fields to facilitate night training and competitions," he said.
"A block of change rooms, a meeting and function room, a kiosk, public toilets and club stores will be built.
"The project also includes a study into the redevelopment of Boomerang Oval and the replacement of amenities not accessible due to the extension of Kalgan Drive directly into the town centre.
"This extension forms part of the Newman Town Centre Revitalisation, a major initiative which has received Royalties for Regions funding.
"The new amenities building at Boomerang Oval will contain change rooms, community meeting space, a kitchen and kiosk, storage space, public toilets, and a first aid and umpires' room.
"These improvements will provide greater services for a range of sporting groups, and the wider community will benefit from the use of the new meeting and function spaces."
