Hon. Colin Barnett
Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened stage one of Mandurah's state-of-the-art redeveloped aquatic and recreation centre.
The $23 million project involved the construction of a new 50 metre outdoor pool, a leisure pool, clubroom facility, geothermal heating and the refurbishment of the existing 25m indoor lap pool.
"The State Government recognises the importance of grassroots community sporting and recreation facilities and that's why we continue to invest in them," Mr Barnett said.
"This state-of-the-art centre is located in one of Western Australia's fastest growing regions and is expected to attract about 650,000 visitors each year, so it's essential there is a modern, safe facility large enough to cater for the community's needs."
The redevelopment is being undertaken in two stages, totalling $38 million. The project received $13.5 million in State Government funding - $11 million through Royalties for Regions and $2.5 million from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said he was pleased Royalties for Regions was investing in community facilities that promoted active lifestyles.
"Residents now have access to a purpose-built recreational facility that will significantly boost their health and wellbeing and contribute towards the rapid growth and development of the Peel region," Mr Redman said.
"Such critical infrastructure supports vibrant and sustainable communities in regional WA."
Stage two of the development will include construction of new indoor sports courts, gymnasium, creche, change rooms and fitness centre. Development is expected to start in January 2016.
