New trades training facilities for Kimberley
Two new training facilities will officially open in the Kimberley this week, enabling more choice and opportunity for trade skills development in the region.
Opening the $6.8million redevelopment of Kimberley Training Institute's Loch Street campus in Derby today, Training and Workforce Development Minister Kim Hames said the new workshops at Derby and Halls Creek would allow more regionally-based apprentices to train locally.
"These modern, industry-standard facilities are designed to meet the growing need for trades-based training in the region and will ensure potential employers have access to a highly-trained local workforce," Dr Hames said.
"The new campus caters for an additional 120 students, and includes two multi-purpose classrooms, a conference room, student amenities and outdoor learning areas.
"It also provides additional capability for metal, construction and automotive trades, and extra capacity to deliver training in some higher level courses."
At the Kimberley Training Institute's Halls Creek Campus a workshop redevelopment project worth more than $3.1million saw improvements to existing workshops and the addition of a new, purpose-built automotive workshop.
"Automotive training, especially small engines and basic mechanical, has proven to be particularly effective in engaging Aboriginal students, teaching practical skills and preparing for them for long-term employment options," Dr Hames said.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said $9million of Royalties for Regions funding had been vital to the delivery of both Kimberley projects.
"The Royalties for Regions Skills Training Initiative is improving access to trade training and addressing a skills shortage in regional Western Australia," Mr Redman said.
"With additional space and resources, improvements to the Kimberley institute's Derby and Halls Creek campuses will provide an opportunity to engage more people in training and work readiness programs, and provide more employment opportunities for the local community into the future."
