Next schools to get 40kmh signs revealed
73 more WA schools to receive flashing LED 40kmh signs in 2014-15
Continuing fulfilment of election promise to make school roads safer
Part of $36million funding commitment over four years to ensure every school with a 40kmh zone receives flashing LED lights
Transport Minister Dean Nalder today revealed the next tranche of Western Australian schools to receive flashing LED Electronic School Zone signs throughout the Perth metropolitan area this year.
"This additional 73 schools will receive LED signs as part of the State Government's $36million commitment to provide the signs to all 1,071 schools in 40kmh zones in WA by 2017," Mr Nalder said.
"The equipment is being delivered under a new contract. The installations in the current financial year - costing $2.8million - will be at metropolitan schools to ensure any glitches encountered can be rectified quickly. This means when we roll out the remainder of the 763 signs in coming years, they will have been thoroughly tested for Western Australian conditions.
"The supply and installation of these flashing signs over the next three years represents the single biggest procurement of electrical components Main Roads WA has ever undertaken."
Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey said the Electronic School Zone signs were a high-profile reminder for motorists to slow down around children.
"The community now has no excuse for not slowing down when travelling through a school zone," Mrs Harvey said.
"Children are our most vulnerable road users and it is the responsibility of every road user to take care and slow down near schools."
The $36million to supply the signs has been allocated from the Road Trauma Trust Account.
