O, O, O, it's magic for Olivia and Oliver

The letter 'O' proved to be the obvious choice for Western Australian parents when naming their newborns, with Olivia and Oliver securing the number one spot of 2015's top baby names.

The letter 'O' proved to be the obvious choice for Western Australian parents when naming their newborns, with Olivia and Oliver securing the number one spot of 2015's top baby names.

Attorney General Michael Mischin said the annual list from the Western Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages revealed trends from previous years were continuing to influence choices made by parents across the State.

"With 248 boys being named Oliver in 2015, it has been a popular choice for the past few years, holding top spot in 2014 and second place in 2013," Mr Mischin said.

"Olivia again claimed the number one spot, with 206 baby girls bearing that name, the same position it occupied in 2013 before dropping to fourth in 2014.

"State-wide, the top five boys' names were Oliver, Jack, James, Noah and William, while for the girls it was Olivia, Ava, Charlotte, Mia and Isla."

The Attorney General said it was interesting to see that the most popular names varied according to where people lived in WA.

"Coming in at number one in the combined Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions was a very royal William for boys and Charlotte for girls, while those in the Wheatbelt/Mid-West region favoured Jack and Isabelle," he said.

"I'd also like to note with some satisfaction that the name Michael comes in at a respectable 40th place in the top 50, with the parents of 76 babies making an excellent choice in 2015."

New entries to the top 10 WA baby names list are Mason, Lachlan and Ruby, which have come at the expense of Lucas, Jacob, Emily and Ella. While Emily topped 2014's list, it fell to 12th place in 2015. Jacob dropped from 10th place in 2014 to 20th place last year.
