Some of the biggest names in world motor sports are set to tackle Western Australia's rugged outback as the 2011 Australasian Safari begins tonight.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said this year's safari, which was being held in the State for the fifth time, promised to be the best in the event's 26-year history.

"Fans can see the likes of three-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres, former safari winner Ben Grabham and V8 Supercar champion Craig Lowndes in action as they race across 3,500km of WA's extraordinary outback," Dr Hames said.

"The safari is truly one of the toughest endurance motor sport events in the world and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to watch the superstars in action as they compete in an eight-day, off-road rally across the outback."

The race begins with a ceremonial start from Hillarys Boat Harbour at 6pm tonight before heading to Geraldton, then Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The Minister said spectator points had been set up along the route for people to enjoy all the action during the race.

"People can also catch the action at the end of each day at safari villages in Geraldton, Mount Magnet, Sandstone, Laverton, Leonora and Kalgoorlie-Boulder," he said.

Dr Hames said the State Government was proud to support the Australasian Safari, through Eventscorp.

"Last year, the safari was seen in more than 100 countries and this year ensures greater exposure of WA's Coral Coast and Golden Outback regions," he said.
