Western Australia's Wheatbelt region will play host to the eighth annual ARB Total Asphalt & Traffic Management Hyden 400, expected to attract thousands of visitors for the gruelling off road motor race.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the Easter long weekend would see national and State champions battle it out in buggies and four-wheel drives along a 400km dirt and gravel course.

"The event is widely regarded as WA's foremost long-course, off road motor race, and the State Government is a proud sponsor of this event," Dr Hames said.

"Serving as round two of the five-event Western Australian Off Road Championship, the race is set to attract and entertain thousands of competitors, support crew, officials and spectators.

"A definite crowd favourite will be the extreme four-wheel drive class as WA's own Russell Cullen defends both his State and national champion titles.

"With funding from the State Government's Regional Events Scheme worth $3million over four years, this gruelling competition is set to engage and excite the Wheatbelt community."

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said communities throughout the State were benefiting from a commitment to regional events of $40million over four years through Royalties for Regions.

"Events give regional communities a reason to celebrate things that make them special and provide the opportunity to showcase that and share it with the rest of the State," Mr Grylls said.

"With such a wide variety of events on offer throughout regional WA, they are helping to boost local economies, attract visitors and give local residents something to get excited about."
