Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today reminded women living in country Western Australia that nominations had opened for the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women's Award 2012.

The award recognises and encourages the vital contribution women make to rural Australia.

Mr Redman said the State had a strong track record with WA women winning the national award for the past two years. This year's winner was Caroline Robinson from Woolocutty near Narembeen and the 2010 winner was Sue Middleton of Wongan Hills.

"Applications for this prestigious annual award need to be submitted by Friday, October 15, coinciding with World Rural Women's Day," he said.

"I strongly urge women to apply if they are working in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, natural resource management and related service industries."

The award, now in its 13th year, continues to play a vital role in the revitalisation of rural Australia. It also helps the winners to build on their success and strengths and highlights the important role women have in contributing to primary industries, resource development and rural Australia.

The Western Australian State winner will receive a $10,000 bursary, which may be used for a variety of projects including overseas study tours, formal training in leadership and business management or even writing a book.

State and Territory winners and runners-up will be offered the opportunity to participate in an Australian Institute of Company Directors-based leadership program to enable them to build their leadership, management and business skills.

The Western Australian 2012 RIRDC Rural Women's Awards are supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food and CBH Group.

The 2012 RIRDC Rural Women's Awards are supported by national sponsors: Westpac Banking Corporation, ABC Radio and Rural Press Ltd.
