Performing arts venue to be named State Theatre Centre

The new performing arts venue in Northbridge will be called the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, to be generally known as the State Theatre Centre.

The new performing arts venue in Northbridge will be called the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, to be generally known as the State Theatre Centre.

Culture and Arts Minister John Day announced the name and revealed the centre's 575-seat main theatre would be named the Heath Ledger Theatre, to honour the late Western Australian actor recognised internationally for his talent.

"A great deal of consideration has been given to the name of the venue and this has involved consultation with the Ledger family - which is pleased Heath is being acknowledged in this way - and a range of stakeholders," Mr Day said.

"The name, State Theatre Centre, strongly identifies the venue as a place of civic pride for all Western Australians and will be a venue where audiences can enjoy high-quality performing arts by local, national and international artists."

In addition to the Heath Ledger Theatre, the centre will also provide other performance spaces.

The 200-seat studio will be a flexible space, suiting a range of performances and artists and the courtyard will offer a place for mixed events in an outdoor setting.

"The State Theatre Centre will be a place to experience professional performing arts in a new and different way," the Minister said.

The centre is scheduled to open in mid-2010.
